Commentary: Méndez made the poster for the opening of the workshop/school, Taller-Escuela de Artes Plásticas (TEAP) of the Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios (League of Revolutionary Writers and Artists; LEAR). Inscríbase (Sign Up), invites workers to enroll in the new school. In a different style from anything by Méndez to this time, the woodblock print depicts four workers in overalls marching together behind a large red arrow. Their youthful-looking faces are slightly individualized, with eyes of different shapes looking in the same direction, and their bodies overlap in a rhythmic pattern. Méndez’s emphasis on the eyes and hands of the workers underscores the importance of vision and action, and the use of the arrow and the geometric depictions of the human figure are reminiscent of Russian Constructivist images. The work fulfills LEAR’s aims of directing art to the proletariat, while directing the proletariat to art. (Deborah Caplow)

Comentario: Méndez realizó el cartel para la inauguración del Taller-Escuela de Artes Plásticas (TEAP) de la Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios (LEAR). Inscríbase invita a los trabajadores a matricularse en la nueva escuela. Con un estilo diferente a todo lo que Méndez había hecho hasta ese momento, el grabado en madera muestra a cuatro trabajadores con overoles marchando juntos detrás de una gran flecha roja. Sus rostros de aspecto juvenil están ligeramente individualizados, con ojos de diferentes formas que miran en la misma dirección, y sus cuerpos se superponen en un patrón rítmico. El énfasis de Méndez en los ojos y las manos de los trabajadores subraya la importancia de la visión y la acción, y el uso de la flecha y las representaciones geométricas de la figura humana recuerdan a las imágenes del constructivismo ruso.
