Commentary: Manuel Maples Arce, in his monograph on Méndez, described this print as follows: “I could point for its strangeness to La silla (The Throne), a fine engraving in which the world of privilege and wealth is about to collapse under the weight of an athlete who lifts it with his shoulders while turning his face toward the viewer. The sense of the extraordinary lies here in the unreality between the proportions of figures and objects and the way they are integrated into the composition.” (Maples Arce 1970, 23)
