Commentary: This work was created for a competition sponsored by the Universidad Obrera on the 100th anniversary of the death of Polish composer  Frédéric Chopin. Méndez connected the work to Chopin’s Étude Op. 25, No. 7 in C sharp minor, which he understood to have the subtitle “Frente al Vístula” (“Facing the Vistula”). Some impressions bear annotations referring to the Auschwitz death camp:  “El Vístula lleva las cenizas de Oswiecim–‘Chopin’” (“The Vistula carries the ashes of Auschwitz–Chopin”) or alternatively “Por el Vístula corren las cenizas de Oswiecim.” (“Through the Vistula flow the ashes of Auschwitz”). Méndez created a companion print, Viento de invierno, also referring to Auschwitz, for the same competition. Méndez had been profoundly moved by a visit to the death camp during his trip to Poland in 1948. (Peter Schneider)

Comentario: Esta obra fue creada para un concurso patrocinado por la Universidad Obrera con motivo del centenario de la muerte del compositor polaco Frédéric Chopin. Méndez relacionó la obra con el Estudio op. 25, nº 7 en do sostenido menor de Chopin, que, a su entender, tenía el subtítulo “Frente al Vístula”. Algunas ejemplares llevan anotaciones que hacen referencia al campo de exterminio de Auschwitz:“ El Vístula lleva las cenizas de Oswiecim–‘Chopin’” o, alternativamente, “Por el Vístula corren las cenizas de Oswiecim”. Méndez creó una obra complementaria, Viento de invierno, también relacionada con Auschwitz, para el mismo concurso. Méndez quedó profundamente conmovido tras visitar el campo de exterminio durante su viaje a Polonia en 1948. (Peter Schneider)
