Commentary: With the history of Mexico on his mind, Méndez made the lithographic poster, Homenaje a Benito Juárez (Homage to Benito Juárez) during the same year as the TGP created the portfolio Estampas de la Revolución Mexicana. Artist Jules Heller, then a guest artist at the TGP, remembered watching Méndez produce the print for a celebration in Juárez’s honor: “…it flowed from his brush so freely, one would think that the brush itself contained a memory of the face of Juárez.” As an iconic depiction of the most revered president of Mexico, Méndez’s calligraphic portrait of Juárez portrays the essential elements of the face that every Mexican would know from early childhood. Comentario: Con la historia de México en mente, Méndez creó el cartel litográfico Homenaje a Benito Juárez en el mismo año en que el TGP realizó la carpeta Estampas de la Revolución Mexicana. El artista Jules Heller, entonces artista invitado en el TGP, recordaba haber visto a Méndez crear el grabado para una celebración en honor a Juárez: “… fluyó de su pincel con tanta libertad, que uno pensaría que el propio pincel contenía un recuerdo del rostro de Juárez” . Como representación icónica del presidente más venerado de México, el retrato caligráfico de Juárez realizado por Méndez retrata los elementos esenciales del rostro que todo mexicano conocería desde su más tierna infancia.
