Commentary:  This print is from a series of 11 etchings depicting traditional festivals in small villages in the state of Tabasco. This image probably depicts the Danza del Caballito Blanco at the Ermita de San Francisco del Pial in Quintín Aráuz, Municipio de Centla. The interior and exterior of the church are depicted in two other etchings in the series. (Peter Schneider)

Comentario: Este grabado forma parte de una serie de 11 grabados que representan fiestas tradicionales en pequeños pueblos del estado de Tabasco. Probablemente, esta imagen representa la Danza del Caballito Blanco en la Ermita de San Francisco del Pial, en Quintín Aráuz, municipio de Centla. El interior y el exterior de la iglesia aparecen representados en otros dos grabados de la serie. (Peter Schneider)

Cataloging note: The editors have not found documentation clearly establishing that the prints in this series are by Méndez. However, the works bear close stylistic resemblance to documented etchings by Méndez and there is other evidence to suggest he may have been their creator. The impressions pictured in this catalogue were once held by the TGP and an entry for “once grabados pequeño [sic] en un sobre” (“eleven small engravings in an envelope”),  quite possibly referring to this series, appears in a TGP inventory of prints by Méndez. The inventory is typed on Taller de Gráfica Popular, A.C. letterhead and is undated but appears to have been compiled sometime between 1959 and 1971. “Lista de obras de Archivo de Leopoldo Méndez,”p.  4, in TGP Records, Box 4 folder 9. A similar, albeit more complex image is included in a sheet with proofs of three etchings by Méndez, signed and dated 1963.

Nota de catalogación: Los editores no han encontrado documentación que establezca de manera definitiva que los grabados de esta serie sean de Méndez. Sin embargo, las obras guardan un gran parecido estilístico con aguafuertes documentados de Méndez y hay otros indicios que sugieren que él podría ser su autor. Los ejemplares que se muestran en este catálogo pertenecieron en el pasado al TGP, y una entrada que dice “once grabados pequeño [sic] en un sobre”, lo que muy posiblemente se refiera a esta serie, figura en un inventario del TGP de grabados de Méndez. El inventario está mecanografiado en papel con membrete del Taller de Gráfica Popular, A.C. y no tiene fecha, pero parece haber sido compilado en algún momento entre 1959 y 1971. “Lista de obras de Archivo de Leopoldo Méndez”, p. 4, en TGP Records, caja 4, carpeta 9. Una imagen similar, aunque más compleja, se incluye en una hoja con pruebas de tres aguafuertes de Méndez, firmada y fechada en 1963.
